The holiday season is officially here, and last night I had the opportunity to head down to historic Trolley Square to check out what they have to offer for gifts and other holiday events.
It’s been a long time since I’ve been to Trolley Square, and I was pleasantly surprised with their remodel and all they have to offer.
Trolley Square has added a lot more parking than before, and I had no problem finding a spot to park. They have street level as well as parking structures, and you can park on all sides of Trolley Square. View their website for parking locations.
Visits with Santa
Santa arrives at Trolley Square on Friday November 28th at 5pm. You can find him on the North side on the main level.
Below are some of the highlights from my shopping trip, and a few gift ideas for those on your Christmas list:
- Spark: Last night I visited Spark for the first time, and it has now become my favorite clothing store! It seems impossible to find cute, warm skirts for Winter, and they have a great selection. They are perfect for missionaries, carolers, holiday parties or any other time you want to wear a cute skirt in the winter without freezing. They also have a large selection of men’s clothing.
- The Old Spaghetti Factory: If somebody on your gift list loves to eat out, a gift certificate to The Old Spaghetti Factory is the perfect gift idea. Their spinach ravioli is my favorite! Rodizio Grill, a Brazilian steakhouse, is also located at Trolley Square, and is one of my husband’s favorite places to dine. They also offer gift certificates. You also dine at Desert Edge Brewery at the Pub.
Photos obtained from Trolley Square website - Pottery Barn and Pottery Barn Kids: If you want to shop at Pottery Barn Kids, the only place to find it in Utah is at Trolley Square. Their Thanksgiving place settings were absolutely adorable! I found a book in Pottery Barn Kids that really tugged at my heart strings. It’s called “How To Babysit A Grandma”. One of my favorite memories from my childhood is when I used to spend hours listening to my grandma read to me. Now that I have kids of my own, they also enjoy visiting my grandma and spending time with her reading books. She is in her late 80s, and has dementia. She thinks she is still independent, but forgets to do even simple things, such as eating breakfast, or what day it is. She doesn’t like to feel like somebody has to take care of her, so when I take my kids over there to sit with her for a few hours, we tell them they are going over there to babysit her. When I came across this book, I knew I had to buy it for my kids to sit and read with Great Grandma. It will be a memory they can treasure for years to come.
- Weller Book Works: There is something about a used bookstore that draws you in. The first time I walked into Sam Weller’s bookstore on Main Street, I ended up spending three hours there, and could have easily spent longer. The Main Street location closed, and they moved to Trolley Square and is now known as Weller Book Works. Not only do they have books, but they also have other various gifts such as games. Our family’s Christmas tradition is to get a new family game each year, and this year at Weller Book Works I found SpeedeeBee, a word game using dice. I can’t wait to play it as a family on Christmas morning!
- Garbage Pail Kids and other fun novelty gifts at Cabin Fever: This was one of my favorite stores to shop for stocking stuffers and gifts for my silly friends. I have been telling my kids about Garbage Pail Kids for a long time now, and when I came across this book of the original series, I had to buy it! They also had calendars, greeting cards, and the popular “SL,UT” t-shirts. I was also delighted to come across all of their Krampus display of products. We like our kids to know about other cultures around the world and how they celebrate the holidays, and last year my husband enlightened us with the story of Krampus, the Christmas Devil who visits naughty children and takes them away in his large sack. Ever since then when my children would talk about Krampus, nobody had heard of him, so you can imagine my delight when I saw that Cabin Fever had books, greeting cards, stockings and stickers. I have a feeling that, as strange as it sounds, the Krampus sticker book I bought my kids is going to be one of their most memorable and unique gifts.
- Vitamin World: I have been out of my green tea tablets for a while, but have been skeptical of buying more. They worked great as a supplement at first for metabolism and weight loss support in addition to my lower calorie diet and daily exercise, but the last few months haven’t seemed to work as well as they used to. The Vitamin World employee was great to answer my questions, and suggest another alternative that also has green tea as one of the ingredients. He was very knowledgeable about the products that are offered and how they work.

Trolley Square – a historical Utah site
Trolley Square has been a part of Utah since the pioneers arrived here in 1847. The area was first dedicated by Brigham Young as the Tenth Ward, and later served as the location for the fair . It later became the Utah Light and Railway Company yard, a site for the 144 trolley cars that served as a main part of Salt Lake City’s transportation system. The trolley system was discontinued in 1945, and instead of demolishing the building in 1972, it became Utah’s only festival marketplace. Trolley Square was registered as a historic site by the state of Utah in 1973, and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996.
