Chinese New Year Celebration

2011 is the Year of the Rabbit in the Chinese calendar. This year, we are very fortunate to ring in the New Year with a fantastic art troupe from the Sichuan University of China.

The troupe is on a whirlwind, 5-city tour of the US sponsored by the Confucius Institute. The troupe will bring us a full two-hour performance of extraordinary traditional Chinese dances, songs, and music.
 
One of the must-see acts is the magical “face mask change”. Part of the 300-year old tradition of the Sichuan Opera, actors change their masks with lightning speed. Even master illusionist David Copperfield, who once attended the show, was baffled by their magic speed. .For hundreds of years, this secret art form was only passed down from father to son. Each performer chosen to learn this art form has to take an oath of secrecy before being allowed to learn even its basics.
