NEW YEARS DAY: First Day Hikes 2014

Utah State Parks, in partnership with America's State Parks, is sponsoring free, guided First Day Hike Programs on New Year’s Day. Begin the New Year rejuvenating and connecting with the outdoors by taking a healthy hike. First Day Hikes offer a great way to get outside, exercise, enjoy nature and welcome the New Year with friends and family. Hikes will be held at Antelope Island, Coral Pink, Dead Horse Point, Snow Canyon and Yuba. 

Antelope Island State Park--Come join a hike on an Island in the middle of a remnant of an ancient sea. as we discuss the geologic forces that created the unique ecosystem and landscape we see today. This is a beautiful and easy trail suitable for all ages. Dogs on a leash are welcome. Time: 1 pm
Location: Lakeside Trail. 2.5 miles one-way (5 miles out and back). Meet at the Lakeside Trail Head which is located in Bridger Bay, Campground site #8.

Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park--Come hike a portion of the ancient Ponderosa Forest growing out of the coral pink sands. This is a GPS History Hike, where we follow the GPS coordinates to some of the oldest Ponderosa Pines located out in the dunes and learn what was happening in the world when these trees were seedlings . The hike will be about a mile and a half through the dunes and probably take an hour and a half. Dogs (on leashes) are welcome. Bring water and snacks. Weather permitting. Hike begins at 11:00 a.m. Meet at the Visitor Center.

Dead Horse Point State Park--Join park staff on a 2.5 mile easy rated hike overlooking some of the most famous and breathtaking red rock country in the world. This area has been featured in many commercials and films including "Thelma and Louise" and "The Lone Ranger." Dogs welcome on leash. Meet park staff at the visitor center at 11:00 a.m. Remember to dress warm, bring plenty of water for you and your pet, a snack if needed, and start your new year out right.

Snow Canyon State Park--Sunrise Hike. BYOC (Bring Your Own Coffee) and welcome the sun as it climbs the red rock walls of Snow Canyon State Park. Join us on this early morning two-mile, round-trip hike to watch the magic of the 'first day of the new year' unfold in the canyon! Meet at the Visitor Center at 7 a.m. Hike is rated easy to moderate due to uneven terrain.

Yuba State Park--Come enjoy a guided hike mile and a half hike to alongside beautiful blue Yuba Reservoir waters with majestic Mt. Nebo in the background. Meet at the Painted Rocks Campground at 11 a.m. Bring plenty of water and pack a lunch.  Dogs on leash welcome.

  1. I was under the impression that the "First Day Hike" was FREE...it's not. We saw your advertisement and headed over to Antelope Island and found out it was still $10 to enter the park. The hike was free once you paid to enter the park. NormallyI do not mind donating money to a great park but we were extremely low on funds and gave them the last $10 we had! Lol. We were not happy.

    1. Tanya, THANK YOU for letting us know this! The information above was taken word for word directly from the Utah State Parks website, and I too was under the impression that they were 100% free! I will definitely make a note of this next year. I would have also been very frustrated!
