Another great guest post from reader Jessi:
Flaming Gorge Reservoir is a huge place. I have been there several times and I still don't think that I have seen the whole thing. It is almost divided equally in Utah and Wyoming. From Vernal Utah, you take U.S. Highway 191 North for about 20-30 miles, and you are there. This is a highway so it can be traveled in any weather.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir offers boating, fishing, water sports and even house boating. It has a few full service marinas that offers storage and maintenance as well as launching. There are also campgrounds available as well.
Flaming Gorge is known for it's large nunmbers of 30+ pound fish caught there every year. The species include rainbow trout, brown trout, kokanee salmon, and smallmouth bass. The biggest ever caught was a 51 pound mackinaw.
When I was younger while fishing with my parents, my stepdad cast out his pole without a hook; it only had a swivel on it. He was just testing the pole and joked that he caught a fish already as he cast. No kidding, he really did catch one that fast on a swivel with no bait! He is now the best fisherman I know. The Green River is below the dam. You can also fish it for brown or rainbow trout.
Flaming Gorge Reservoir has two visitor centers. One is called Red Canyon Visitor Center. I have never been there but it looks like a neat place. The other is the Flaming Gorge Dam Visitor Center. Guided tours of the dam and power plant are conducted year round and take about 45-60 minutes.
The water level on our trip there was very high. I heard it is record high. It is a neat place to visit. We are planning on going back there on labor day weekend and seeing a lot more.
