Clark Planetarium staff will be on site at both the Gateway Olympic Fountain Plaza and Wheeler Farm to host solar eclipse viewing parties for the public this Thursday, October 23^rd, 2014 for the Partial Solar Eclipse. Attendees will have access to telescopes equipped with solar filters and can interact with Clark Planetarium staff to learn more about the eclipse and the solar system.

A Partial Solar Eclipse occurs when the Moon’s shadow blocks only a portion of the Sun, casting a partial shadow onto Earth’s surface. Here in Salt Lake City, and throughout the state of Utah, the Moon’s shadow will block about 50% of the Sun. Clark Planetarium Director, Seth Jarvis, will be on ABC4 at 6:30 am on Thursday morning to talk about pinhole projectors, which you can make at home! Those viewers who can’t make it to a party can purchase solar eclipse glasses (the eclipse should NOT be viewed with the naked eye!) at many places throughout Salt Lake City. They can be purchased for $1.95 per pair at Clark Planetarium.

Come into the Clark Planetarium (FREE entry, as always!) between now and October 30^th and enter to win a Orion XT8 Skyquest Dobsonian Telescope (retail ($359.95). There is no purchase necessary. Entry forms are located at the register in the Planet Fun science store right inside the planetarium.
