“I have
lived in Provo since 1990. I wanted Utah County to experience frozen custard
like the Midwest, and with my dad soon retiring from public education, it was
the perfect time to make it happen,” said
Jason Christensen, co-owner of the Coneys Frozen Custard. “Coneys became a
reality after many family discussions and with additional encouragement of a
business partner, Jeremy Curtis, who was living in Milwaukee, WI, “the Frozen
Custard Capitol of the World.”
With the
entrepreneurial mind of Jason, additional financial backing of Curtis, and the work
ethic of J. Dale, the business plan for Coneys unfolded. The trio spent time interacting with
successful frozen custard companies across the county, attending “scoop
school”, several custard crawls throughout Milwaukee, and brainstorming with
the Christensen family to get every aspect of Coneys exactly right.
“No one
in the family has had any experience in the food business, aside from the
little business Jason had selling eggs, corn and tomatoes from our small family
farm to the neighbors while he was growing up,” said J. Dale, manager of
Coneys. “It’s fulfilling to see that my
son who once sold my corn, has become a successful entrepreneur and created a
community restaurant that has kept his dad young.”
J. Dale,
who served as a teacher, principal, and superintendent in public education, has
led the strong management team at Coneys since the beginning. Coneys is known for J. Dale’s friendly-face,
alongside co-managers Katharina Green and David Anderson. J. Dale has also been a strong force at
Coneys in supporting the community, including local schools and other learning
institutions. Coneys’ support of the
community has come full circle, as the restaurant has been showered in awards
including Best of State in the specialty ice cream and food categories, and
even a front cover of Salt Lake Dining Magazine for the best gourmet burger in
the state. The restaurant has also
developed dozens of loyal customers.
Coneys
will celebrate the success of 10 years in business and show appreciation for
the community with a Coney Island themed celebration full of games, giveaways,
and a special guest appearance from Miss Orem from 12-4 pm this Saturday. Free custard cones will also be served from
12-8pm.
