Weber State University Campus Recreation Outdoor Program
to host Fifth Annual Ogden Climbing Festival

(April 2, 2012) – Weber State
University Campus Recreation Outdoor Program presents the fifth annual Ogden
Climbing Festival, April 27-29, 2012. The committee invites climbers and
non-climbers to attend the festival that boasts free gear demos, climbing
clinics, a barbecue, event after party, community clean up, and the chance to
meet renowned adventurers and rock climbers. In addition, the festival will also
host an outdoor boulder competition on Saturday at the Ogden Boulder Field. All
events are open to the public and family-friendly.
“We invite everyone in the community to experience the
Climbing Festival. If you are a novice, an expert, or just have an interest in
climbing we provide all levels of instruction, coaching and expertise to enjoy
this family-friendly activity,” said Daniel Turner, Ogden Climbing Festival
event organizer.
The Climbing Festival begins Friday, April 27, 2012 at 5
p.m. with a free gear demo and climbing expo at the Weber Rocks climbing gym at
WSU. The demo will feature the newest gear from many climbing and outdoor
companies.
On Saturday, April 28 at 10 a.m., the Ogden Climbing
Festival will host an outdoor Red Point Boulder Competition at one of Ogden’s
premier climbing spots, the Ogden Boulder Field. Red Point is a climbing
competition with many levels of division where points are awarded upon level of
difficulty in each division. Registration is $20.
The festival will continue on Saturday with a free
outdoor barbecue hosted by Red Bull at 12 p.m. Free climbing clinics for all
ages ranging from beginner to advanced will take place from 1 to 3:30 p.m.
Peter Croft, one of America’s foremost rock climbers
will be this year’s keynote presenter. Peter will share his expertise and
discuss his legendary feats at 6:30 p.m. in the WSU Wildcat Theater. The Front
Climbing Club will host this year’s after party. Festivities will begin at 8:30
p.m. with music and food catered by Roosters Brewing Co. and Restaurant. The
event will conclude with a volunteer effort to help maintain and restore the
Ogden Boulder Field on Sunday, April 29 at 10 a.m.
“As Ogden has become an outdoor recreation
destination and climbing hotspot, festival attendance has increased, drawing
climbers from along the Wasatch Front and Southern Idaho areas. We anticipate
more than 700 participants and spectators to attend the event this year,” said
Turner.
For experienced climbers, the Ogden Climbing Festival
directors will offer an AMGA Single Pitch Instructor Certification Course prior
to the
Climbing Festival, Wednesday, April 25-27th.
