Itty Bitty Draper City
ITTY BITTY DRAPER CITY For families with kids of all ages.
Match the “Itty Bitty Draper City” clues with the real Draper City locations in the itty bitty photos. All correct entries submitted by library closing time on September 30 will be entered in a random drawing to win a not so itty bitty grand prize!

Beehive Ice Cream Challenge
Ages up to 12 years. old. Find a certain Beehive book and get a treat. Vote all year long and get a prize for each book you read. Help us reach our goal of 1200 votes to have an Ice Cream Party. Each month we will have a drawing for all of those who voted. The prize is a stuffed animal.

Mom Craft Night

The Libary is going to participate in the MAgna Arts Festival and is using the auditorium for programming and an art show.

I Read To Animals
The Best Friends I Read to Animals program targets elementary students K-3 providing humane education lessons along with the opportunity for each child to read one-on-one with a trained pet partner team. It is a collaborative effort among Best Friends Education Ambassadors and the library. The program builds kindness, compassion and respect towards animals, encourages language and reading skills in a non-judgmental environment,increases reading confidence and motivation to read, and may lower the stress level of young readers.

The Day After 9/11
On the 10th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks join us for the award-winning documentary "9/12: From Chaos To Community". This film tells the story of a resourceful group of New Yorkers from various walks of life who volunteer at Ground Zero, forming surprising — and surprisingly deep — relationships, as they transcend politics to heal their city, their country and themselves.

Special Needs Sensory Storytime
A unique storytime for children with special needs. These storytimes will be geared to autistic children. Feel free to bring anything that would make your child more comfortable. Stories and songs will be followed by a craft and time to socialize. The attendance of a participating adult is required. Attendance is limited. Just Jumpin'
Utah's only competitive, nationally-ranked jump rope team performs routines that will amaze you to think they are possible. After a 30-minute performance jumpers will work with children to teach them jump rope skills. This event will be held in the parking lot. Feel free to bring a chair to sit on during the performance.

Hooping
Hooping is so entertaining and fun that it doesn't feel like exercise! Even if you have NEVER hooped before, it's extremely easy to learn using our hoops. Back To School Teen ReadAThon and Gaming Lock In Party
The January teen readathon was so popular that it's back, this time including new board game demos from library system gaming experts Ernest & Greg! Bring your own reading materials & games or sample the library's holdings. Bring your own sleeping bags & snacks. Some snacks & board games will be provided. Online registration required, plus a permission slip signed by a parent required at the door for admittance to the event. Limited to 50 teens. Must be 12 years of age.

Hip Hop Dance Crew Class For Kids
Kids ages 6 to 13 are invited to learn hip-hop dance at this free class led by Laura Andrews, choreographer and director of the local dance studio, Dance Crew. Bring your freestylin' skill and learn new ones, including basic foot work, top rock, stalls, and an incredible short routine, then watch Dance Crew's hip-hop team show off their talents. This class is great for dancers of all levels, beginner to advanced.

Honey Harvest Day

The City Library's rooftop bees have been hard at work for the second summer in a row, gathering pollen and nectar from downtown's gardens and producing sweet rewards. On Saturday, September 3, Salt Lake City residents are invited to share in the honey harvest.
At 9:00 a.m., Salt Lake City Beekeeper Frank Whitby, with the assistance from local Boy Scouts, will harvest the honey from the hives. The public are invited to watch the beekeepers open the hives and remove the honeycomb from Level 5 of the Main Library.
At 1:00 p.m., a special bee-themed storytime will take place in the Main Library's Story Room. Local beekeepers will be on hand to answer questions and to provide samples from several honey varieties, showcasing the unique flavors of honey created from different pollens.

Phun With Physics

A duo of geniuses from the University of Utah's Department of Physics and Astronomy makes physics more fun with hands-on demonstrations using everyday things.

Eid al-Fitr

Eid al-Fitr, which literally means “the feast of breaking the fast,” marks the end of Ramadan, the Islamic month of fasting. Eid al-Fitr is a time for fellowship, to come together as a community and renew friendships and family ties. Fact or Fad: Nutrition Education at the University of Utah School of Medicine
It is widely known that good nutrition is an essential component of good health. But what is good nutrition? Dr. Janet Lindsley will share how future doctors are learning to think about nutrition and analyze the differences between fact and fad.

So You Want To Be A Firefighter?

Wonder what it takes to be a firefighter? Meet the brave men and women of the Salt Lake City Fire Department and explore the firefighting skills, safety practices, and special equipment they use every day to save lives. Find out if you can take the heat at this event for ages 6 to 13.

Mutated: How The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shaped Our Culture

The City Library's Graphic Novel Club will host local artist and writer Blair Sterrett to present a multi-media presentation on the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and how their comics, TV show, films, and merchandise has influenced American culture. With added interest from the film students of San Francisco Arts institute, this is fast becoming a multimedia presentation on the history, influences, and the very unusual ways TMNT has effected the entertainment industry and culture in general. Sterrett's presentation will include slides, video, original comic examples, and an opportunity for questions from the audience.

Survive A Dull Day With Glitter Painting
Longing for a shimmery likeness of your cat to hang above the mantle? How about a fancy portrait of yourself to give your mom for her birthday? Send us a photo of your choice ahead of time, and we’ll turn it into a paint-by-number image that you can bling-out at our Glitter Painting Party! For ages 12 to 18.
