SLC Public Library Main Location Celebrates 10th Year

Community Invited to Submit Photos, Tell Their Library Stories On Video as Part of Month Long Festivities   January 31, 2013—Salt Lake City—One can hardly believe that it has been ten years since Salt Lake City Public Library opened the doors of its beautiful Main building, and yet, it is also difficult to remember the city without it. The award-winning library, designed by internationally acclaimed architect Moshe Safdie, has become a focal point of Salt Lake City, a tourist destination, and a community hub, in addition to offering the broad array of services The City Library is known for.   The City Library has invited members of the community to submit photos of them enjoying the Main Library and Library Square on the library's Facebook Page (www.facebook.com/slcpl), via Twitter using #SLCPL10, or through email (socnet@slcpl.org). Photos will be featured in a gallery in the Main Library's Urban Room, and prizes will be awarded to the best pictures. 
On Saturday, February 9, members of the public will be invited to record their library experiences on video, with students from Spy Hop Productions on hand. The vignettes will be used to share the story of The City Library's impact on the community during the rest of the year.    In celebration of the building’s tenth year, activities abound. On Friday, February 8, the Children’s Department will host ten story times, beginning at 9:45am and continuing every 45 minutes throughout the day, culminating in a birthday sing-a-long at 4:30pm.   On Saturday, February 9, exciting events continue. The morning kicks off at 9am with The Friends of The City Library’s Member’s Only book sale—don’t worry, memberships are available at the door! Later in the afternoon, beginning at 2pm, is the celebration of Chinese New Year, complete with a dragon dance!    As February continues, so to do an array of additional events, including Valentine’s Day crafts for patrons of all ages, staged readings of contemporary theater works by People Productions, and a lecture from noted activist and former Black Panther Jamal Joseph.   All month long, visitors are encouraged to pick up a Main Library guide, and take tours of the building, perhaps for the first time, or to be reminded of visits a decade ago, and to take note of the great role the building and library services play in the city.  For more information on events surrounding the ten-year celebration of the Main Library visit www.slcpl.org.
