GOAL Foundation to Test Competitor’s Strength and Survival during Hurt in the Dirt

Ogden, Utah - The Goal Foundation (GOAL),www.getoutandlive.org, will crown the “King and Queen of Pain” on August 25, 2012 during the third annual Hurt in the Dirt at Fort Buenaventura, 2450 A Avenue in Ogden. Competitors will test their endurance as they run, bike, jump, dodge and crawl their way to victory during an off-road duathon and nighttime trail run. New this year, GOAL introduces a women’s only 5K/10K off-road trail run, Skirt in the Dirt.

The starting gun will sound at 9 a.m. for the new Skirt in the Dirt run, sponsored by Salomon. This race gives new meaning to “over the river and through the woods” as the ladies take on the legendary Hurt in the Dirt course.  Competitors will run through trees, over obstacles, through water, sand, dirt and mud for top standing.

The main event, an off-road duathon, will begin at 4:30 p.m. Participants will “Run Ride and Survive” as they repeat several legs on a two-mile run and a five-mile cycling course. Pain will set in as contenders run a total of eight miles and bike 20. The race consists of four legs - two laps on a four-mile course, two laps on a ten-mile bike course, repeated twice. Individuals may compete on all four legs of the race, but must alternate legs in the same order as teams. Relay teams may consist of two to four members with legs divided however they choose.  One team member must complete a full leg in a proper sequence. Mountain bikes are recommended for the course, but cyclo-cross bikes are permitted. Helmets are required for anyone competing in the bike legs. Participants must be at least 12 years or older to take part.

During the event, the Ogden Friends of Acoustic Music will present a free concert from Swamp Cabbage. The band will perform periodically from 4:30 to 6 p.m. and take the stage for a full concert beginning at 8 p.m. Swamp Cabbage’s inspirational archetype is a mish mash of genres boiled into a stew of mixed blues, jazz, soul, southern rock, Appalachian and even classical vibes.

The festivities will end with a Salomon Nightime Trail Run at 9 p.m. The 10K late-night dash is open to everyone. GOAL will party into the late evening hours with a course cut off at 11 p.m. Participants are required to wear a headlamp.

Divisions for all events are 18 and under, 19-55 and 55 and older. Attire that can get muddy or torn to shreds is recommended.

Awards will be presented to the first place winners only in the Women’s Individual, Men’s Individual, Women’s Relay, Men’s Relay, Mixed Relay and Shop Challenge.  A special “King and Queen of Pain” ceremony will be held following the nighttime trail run. Awards will be held at approximately 8:30 p.m. in the festival area. All finishers will receive a mug and a certificate for one free beer or root beer from Roosters Brewing Company.
