May 2012 Activities At The Ogden Nature Center


Wild Wednesday/Whoo Eats Whom? 
Wednesday, May 2 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members

All ages welcome!
Learn about predator prey relationships with the help of Pueo the Short-eared Owl.  Meet Pueo in person and get an up-close look at skulls, pelts, teeth, and more while learning about the traits that help animals survive in the wild.
 
Wild Wednesday/Hiding Habitats: Wetlands and Ponds 
Wednesday, May 9 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
Meet Pueo the Short-eared Owl and learn about the wetlands that he calls home.  Play a wetland game and with the help of a teacher/naturalist, and venture out on the Nature Center's trails to look for signs of wildlife in and around the ponds. 
 
Fly with the Flock 5K Fun Run & Pancake Breakfast
Saturday, May 12 -- run begins at 8 am
Day-of registration will begin at 6:30 a.m., but is limited to space still available.
Early registration is $22 for adults and $14 for kids. Breakfast, a t-shirt, an up-cycled goodie bag and prize drawings are all included.  After May 1 rates increase to $27 for adults and $16 for kids.  Early registration guarantees your t-shirt and goodie bag.
Run or walk and enjoy a yummy breakfast to benefit the Ogden Nature Center. With options for a 5K, a 2.5K for kids (12 and under) and for the littles -- a 100 foot kids dash with every dasher winning a tree-cookie medal. Wild & Edible Foraging Walk
Saturday, May 12 from 11 am - 1 pm
$3 for ONC members/$5 for non-members
Ages: 10+
Come out for a walk and wild snack during the spring salad season. Join staff botanist Cheyenne Herland and James Magruder, a volunteer naturalist for Weber Pathways and local wild foods forager, for a walk to identify and collect spring greens. We'll then enjoy a dish created from the foods we've found. To reserve your spot call 801-621-7595 to pre-register and pay by Friday, May 11 at 2 pm.
 
Wild Wednesday/Fantastic Falcons 
Wednesday, May 16 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
What can dive at over 200 miles per hour?  What has a beak that acts like a can opener?  Falcons!  Spend time with Jetta, the American Kestrel.  Learn what separates falcons from other types of birds. Then take a short hike with a naturalist to look for signs of falcons at the Ogden Nature Center.  Please meet in the Visitor Center. 
 
Scout Saturdays
Saturday, May 19 
Choose one workshop or all three
9 am - Native vs. Invasive
10 am - Conservation
11 am - Venomous Reptiles
Cost $5 per scout
The Ogden Nature Center provides the perfect outdoor classroom for scout activities. An Ogden Nature Center teacher/naturalist will help your scouts pass off badge requirements during these 45-minute classes. Reservations and a non-refundable deposit are required. Wild Wednesday/Our National Symbol: A Memorial Day Program

Did you know the Bald Eagle had to compete with the turkey to become our national symbol?  It's true!  Join us for a special Memorial Day program with the Ogden Nature Center's own Bald Eagle, Des Ta Te.  Come learn about these special birds and hear how they finally became our national symbol.   Please meet in the Visitor Center.
 
Preschool Discovery Days -- Floats & Fins & Things That Swim
Choose a date and time:
Tuesday, May 29 or Thursday, May 31
9:30 am, 11:00 am or 1 pm
Cost - $5 child/adult pair - non members, 
$4 child/adult pair for members 
General admission fees apply to additional family members. A non-refundable deposit of 50% must be paid in advance for groups of 5 children or more. Pre-registration is required. 
Ages: 3-5  
Try finding a frog or spotting a turtle as we explore the world of creatures that swim. Time will be spent inside as well as outside, enjoying fishy stories and making a fish magnet to take home.  Outside exploration of pond life will be included.
 
Wild Wednesday/Accipiters-Aces of the Forest 
Wednesday, May 30 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
Sharpies! Coops! Goshawks!  Utah is home to these three types of Accipiters, also known as the true hawks.   Meet the Ogden Nature Center's own goshawk and discover how Accipiters survive in the forests.  Please meet in the Visitor Center.
