April Activities and Events at Ogden Nature Center

APRIL 2012 ACTIVITIES AT THE OGDEN NATURE CENTER

Kundalini Yoga for beginners and intermediate
8-week session
Mondays, April 2 - May 21, from 6:30-7:45 pm
$45 members / $50 non-members
Ages: adult
This Kundalini Yoga class is ideal for beginners or for those who want a gentle Kundalini practice.  Classes will be held in the L.S. Peery Education Center at the Ogden Nature Center.  Bring your own yoga mat and blanket. Wear loose, comfortable clothing. It is best not to eat before class.  Taught by instructor Bruce Fisk.  Please pre-register by calling 801-621-7595.
 
Preschool Discovery Days
Floats & Fins & Things That Swim
Choose a date and time:
Monday, April 2 or Tuesday, April 3
9:30 am, 11:00 am or 1 pm
Cost - $5 child/adult pair for non members -- $4 child/adult pair for members 
General admission fees apply to additional family members. A non-refundable deposit of 50% must be paid in advance for groups of 5 children or more. Pre-registration is required. 
Ages: 3-5  
Find a frog or spot a turtle as we explore the world of creatures that swim. Time will be spent inside as well as outside, enjoying fishy stories and making a fish magnet to take home.  Outside exploration of pond life will be included.
 
Wild Wednesday / The Wild Truth!  An April Fools Day Event 
Wednesday, April 4 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
Nature can weave some pretty tall tales, but that doesn't mean they're not true.  To help celebrate April Fools Day come spend some time listening to true stories from our wild world.  Discover how weather has changed history and examine some of the most unbelievable animals and plants on the planet.  Check in at the Visitor Center.
 
SPRING BREAK NATURE CAMPS
Nature's Magic and Mysteries 
Thursday, April 5, from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm
Cost: $ 35 members / $45 non-members
Ages: 7-10
From tiny seeds sprouting into giant trees, to creatures that change shape as they grow, nature is filled with magic! Spend your spring break outside, exploring nature's wonders through games and scientific experiments. Please call 801-621-7595 to pre-register.
Animal Abodes
Friday, April 6, from 9 am to 2 pm 
Cost: $ 30 members / $35 non-members
Ages: 5-6
From tiny tree crevices and tangled nests, to holes big enough to stand in, the Ogden Nature Center is full of animal homes. Spend your spring break outside exploring animal homes and try your hand at building like the animals do.  Please call 801-621-7595 to pre-register.
 
Call for Entries:  Earth Day Art Contest
. Entry deadline: Saturday, April 7 at the Ogden Nature Center, 966 W. 12th Street, Ogden
. Late entries may not be judged
. No Fee to Enter / Grade Levels: K-6
. Guidelines:
Entries must be 9"x12" using the theme: "Water: Where Does It Come From? Where Does It Go?" Please do not glue anything onto your project.  Entries must include the following information on the back: name (first and last), school, grade (k-6 only), teacher, home phone and project title.  Art posters will be on display in the Ogden Nature Center's L.S. Peery Education Center April 21 through June 2, 2012.  Entries will not be returned, but may be picked up June 4 through June 9.  After June 9 contest entries become the property of the Ogden Nature Center. Prizes will be awarded in each grade, with one grand prize winner per grade.  Winners will announced at an awards program on April 21 at 11 am.
 
Wild Wednesday / Jump Into Spring!

Spring has arrived at the Ogden Nature Center!  Help bring in the new season as we learn how animals and plants adapt to warmer temperatures and longer days.  Join a naturalist and hit the trails looking for signs of spring.  Be prepared to hear chorus frogs and see migrating birds. Check in at the Visitor Center.
 
Wild Wednesday / Close Encounters of the Natural Kind

Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
Have you ever wondered what the world looks like to an ant?  Using a microscope you'll get the chance to find out with the help of a teacher/naturalist.  Check in at the Visitor Center.
 
Earth Day Celebration (full press release coming soon!)
Saturday, April 21, 12 noon - 4 pm
$2 per person
Come celebrate Earth Day at the Ogden Nature Center!  Enjoy earth-friendly exhibitors, live entertainment, fresh food, kids nature crafts, speakers and fun activities.  Local beekeepers, urban gardeners, sheep shearing and wool spinning will all be part of the many attractions.  Come learn what you can do to improve the health of the planet.  For more information call 801-621-7595 or visit  www.ogdennaturecenter.org.

All ages welcome!
Birds make their homes high and low, in nests, in holes or on rocks. Explore the handiwork of nature's feathered architects and try your hand at building a nest like the birds do. Check in at the Visitor Center.
 
The Music of Nature 
Saturday, April 28, at 10 am  
Cost: $5 members / $7 nonmembers
Ages: 12 and up
Do you hear music in the soundscape of the outdoors? Does birdsong make you want to sing along? From the first music of indigenous peoples to the lyrics and rhythms of music today, nature is a powerful force of inspiration and connection. Whether or not you consider yourself a musician, come experience the magic that happens when creative people are reminded to slow down and really listen. Please bring a notebook, pencil, open mind and harmonious heart. Dress for the weather. Pre-register by calling 801-621-7595 by Friday, April 27 at 4 pm.
