Days One and Two, October 17 & 18: Meet your hosts Paul and Karen Warner at the SLC Airport for a morning flight* to Baltimore, MD. Upon arrival we will board our motorcoach and travel north into Pennsylvania. Our first memorable stop will be at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine, the birth place of our National Anthem. Then we travel onto York, PA, centrally located near many interesting historical sites and close to the fascinating Amish Country. While in this area we will visit Hershey, PA and get an interesting behind the scenes look at the chocolate giants, Milton Hershey and Forrest Mars, while touring the famous Hershey Chocolate Factory. An experience in Amish towns like Bird-In-Hand, Intercourse, Strasburg and Lancaster will fill the afternoon. While driving through Amish country, we will enjoy a typical Amish supper. Stay in York, PA for 2 nights.
Day Three, October 19: After breakfast at the hotel, we will drive south to Gettysburg National Military Park and explore the museum, visitor center and famous battlegrounds. The Battle of Gettysburg was a turning point in the Civil War. A visit to President Dwight D. Eisenhower’s home and farm located adjacent to the Gettysburg Battlefield will be available. Enjoy an afternoon stop at Harpers Ferry National Historical Park where you will feel like you just stepped into the past; stroll the picturesque streets and visit shops, exhibits and/or museums. A short drive will take us to Winchester, VA to visit George Washington’s Office, Abram’s Delight or 18th Century Valley Cabin Museums. Stay in Strasburg, VA for 2 nights.
Day Four, October 20: Don’t blink… This morning, start your day with a breathtaking drive through the Blue Ridge Mountains in Shenandoah National Park. With you camera at the ready, enjoy spectacular fall colors and abundant wildlife. This unforgettable drive will take us to Charlottesville, where we will stop at Jefferson’s Monticello. Here we will have the chance to explore Thomas Jefferson’s home, gardens and grounds as we learn more about the Third President of the United States. Enjoy the beautiful campus of the University of Virginia, (founded by Thomas Jefferson). The ride back will allow a stop in the quaint town of Waynesboro.
Day Five, October 21: Today we make our way towards our Nation’s Capital. Our first stop will be at the Manassas National Battlefield Park where you can visit the Henry Hill Visitor center and learn about BOTH Civil war battles fought here only one year apart. Next explore Great Falls Park where the Potomac River falls over a series of steep, jagged rocks and through the narrow Mather Gorge. Great Falls Park offers history, nature and beauty. In the afternoon we will visit the Lincoln, Washington, Vietnam War, Korean War and World War I Memorials. Stay in the Washington DC area for 2 nights.
Day Six, October 22: There are so many extraordinary sites to visit in Washington DC. Today is your day to explore on your own. Some choices are, (but not limited to) Mt. Vernon, Smithsonian museums, the Arlington Cemetery (includes the Changing of the Guard), our Nation’s Capital and Library of Congress, the Spy Museum, the Ford Theater, the Holocaust Museum, Alexandria Old Town that includes George Washington Masonic National Memorial. Your hosts, Paul and Karen Warner will discuss all the options to help you decide where to visit.
Day Seven, October 23: After a short church service and checking out of the hotel, the morning is yours to explore. Early afternoon we board the motorcoach and take a drive down Embassy Row. We’ll see the Washington National Cathedral, and then continue a drive past the Washington LDS Temple. Our last stop is the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD (ages 16 and older must have valid ID) where we will take a walking tour of the academy and experience life on the “Yard”. You can choose to end your tour at the Baltimore airport, or stay in Washington DC to do a little more exploring on your own.
