Salt Lake County and City Library Events - May

The Salt Lake City and County Libraries always have tons of events going on for families of all ages! Below is a description of special events. Find the address for each library in the link following each event description.

Mothers' Day Make and Take
Make or pick up and take home a beautiful craft for Mom at the library!

Learn To Ballroom Dance
The City Library is expanding our popular How to Ballroom Dance program with more classes at more locations. All levels of dancers are encouraged to participate.

Viva Vegetables: Asparagus
Adults. Have you ever wondered how to pick good asparagus or wondered what else to do with it other than drown it in hollandaise sauce? Come learn how to nourish your body with asparagus. We will discuss the health benefits of asparagus, and how to select and prepare asparagus. Class includes a food demonstration and sample.

Pajama Time
For kids of all ages with a participating adult. "Pajammy to the left. Pajammy to the right.-Everybody's wearing them for storytime tonight." Join us for stories, songs and fun (with or without your jammies).

Science Movie Night
Is It Real Science Or Reel Science?
Join us for free movie screenings followed by lively discussion with an expert in the field, cosponsored by the Utah Museum of Natural History (UMNH). All films begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Main Library auditorium. Visit www.umnh.utah.edu/movie for more information. 2nd Wednesday of every month.
Wednesday, May 11, In the Shadow of the Moon (2007)
Between 1968 and 1972, the world watched in awe each time an American spacecraft voyaged to the Moon. Only 12 American men walked upon its surface, and they remain the only human beings to have stood on another world. Join Robert Bigelow, Education Program Specialist at the Clark Planetarium, for discussions on space exploration

Tarantulas, Frogs, Pythons, Scorpions, and More!
The Living Planet Aquarium brings its popular interactive Rainforest program to the library. See and touch numerous tropical rainforest animals,learn their characteristics and how they interact with each other. This may be your only chance to see a Rainbow Boa Constrictor. Don't miss it!

Budgeting 101
Adults. Learn the basics of budgeting, how to track spending, save with coupons, building good credit, pay down your debt and protect yourself from fraud with Marilyn Albertson of the USU Extension Service. To register a spot call 801-468-3179 or register online.

Special Needs Sensory Storytime
A unique storytime for children with special needs. These storytimes will be geared to autistic children but any child of any age is welcome. The attendance of a participating adult is required. Attendance is limited. Please contact Carrie Rogers-Whitehead at Kearns Library for more information. Attendee must be between the ages of 1 Month and 18 Years old. Attendee MUST give 24 hour cancellation notice to allow others on the waiting list to attend.

The Three Wishes Puppet Show
Families. Puppet show. This tale has a mysterious magic lantern, three wishes, a sultan, and a very spoiled princess. Presented by the Utah Puppet Theater.

Ladies' Lock-In
You asked for it, you got it! Leave the children at home and join us for fun and friendship at our first-ever Ladies Lock-in! Learn how to organize your closets with help from Donna Harper, with Clear & SIMPLE. There will be other fun activities, including a craft and a recipe exchange (bring one to share). For women age 18 and over. No children admitted.

Signed Permission slip REQUIRED! Please be aware, the 3rd movie will be considered a lock-in. Once the movie has begun,teens will not be able to leave the library until 9pm.

Pirate Art Activity
Kids and Teens. Arrr! Calling all Pirates of the Caribbean! Drop by the library and pick up a Pirate Art Activity. Color, decorate and return to the information desk at the Taylorsville Library. Completed entries will be displayed in the library during April and May. All participants will receive a swashbuckling prize.

Perennial Planting For Continuous Color
Whether you're a green thumb or all thumbs, the Perennial Planting for Continuous Color workshop is a great event for you. Local plant expert Barney Barnett of Willard Bay Gardens will reveal the secrets of making your garden vivid, thriving, and water-wise. Part of The City Library's Water Week events. Do You Know Alex and Bella? Trivia Contest!
This month the Draper Library is giving away a complete set of the Alex Rider books by Anthony Horowitz and a complete set of the Twilight books by Stephanie Meyer. Pick up a copy of either the Stormbreaker or the Twilight trivia questions. Or try them both! You will find the trivia questions at the Adult Information Desk or in the Teen area. The person with the most correct answers will be the winner. (We will have a drawing for the winner if there is a tie.) For teens grades 6th-12th. Bricks For Kidz
Reinforce essential preschool skills with a fun, new approach based on the time-tested popularity of LEGO® bricks! Introduce your preschoolers to the fun of learning, building and playing the Bricks 4 Kidz® way! Watch their eyes light up as kids dig into a pile of brightly colored DUPLO® bricks to create fun, simple sculptures based on the ABC’s. For children ages 3 - 5 accompanied by an adult. Registration is limited and begins May 2nd at 10:00 a.m. You can register in person at the Whitmore children's desk,online, or by calling 801 944-7539. Ready Race Lego Party
For ages 5 and up. Come by anytime between 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Experience the thrills of the Indy 500! Ready Race provides legos to build your own super race car then race it down one of two deluxe race tracks. (You don’t get to keep the legos.)

Princess Amerah Royal Storytime
Princess Amerah reads the story of Princess Amerah and the Magic Dress and sings four original songs. Royal games and a surprise visit from Sadie the trained miniature dachshund. You can wear your own princess regalia for a photo opportunity with Princess Amerah after the Royal event. Online Registration is required for every child attending.

Dog Day Afternoons
The City Library and R.E.A.D. (Reading Education Assistance Dogs) offer children the opportunity to practice reading with a fuzzy friend in a positive, non-threatening environment.
Bocca, a Great Pyrenees, will visit Foothill (2nd Saturday of the month, 1-2:30pm);
Harvey, the goofy dog, will visit Main (1st Saturday of the month, 1-2:30pm);
Dare Devil the cat will curl up at Chapman (1st Saturday of the month, 1-3pm).

Bracelet and Earring Make And Take
Tweens and teens- Make either a cute bracelet or a pair of earrings. Sign up at the desk to register. No charge!

Teen Craft: Ductigami
Teen craft: ductigami. Come celebrate the opening of the new Magna Library in our new building by making original duct tape origami creations! Make your own wallet out of duct tape and have yummy treats. No registration needed, come anytime between 6-8pm

Come hang out with the library and the American West Symphony of Sandy as they introduce us to stringed instruments. Learn how to tell the difference between instruments and discover how they work. Children are very involved throughout the entire class.

Ages 8 and up. Meet Jon Ninja. He dresses as a Ninja, has all the Ninja weapons and knows a lot about Ninja history. He is all Ninja, all the time!

Do you want to meet a firefighter? If so, come hear about fire safety and meet your local fireman. The firefighters will also bring their truck along for the kids to explore.

Ventriloquist
Ventriloquist, comedian and magician Darren Griffin will make you smile. Some of Darren’s friends include a signing cockatoo, Marlin the magician(a distant cousin of Merlin)and a talking drawing board.
