GRAND COUNTY
May 5th
Time: 7:00 pm.
Event: Lecture by Jody J. Patterson, Ph. D., Montgomery Archaeological Consultants, "Old Problems, New Data: The Enigmatic Archaeology of Nine Mile Canyon." With thousands of rock art panels, stone towers precariously perched on rock pinnacles, and nearly inaccessible granaries in rock crevices hundreds of feet above the canyon floor, the archaeology of Nine Mile Canyon has bewildered several generations of archaeologists. What little is known about the canyon's prehistory comes from a handful of early excavations and numerous site inventories conducted by dedicated students and avocational archaeologists. Within the last 10 years, there has been a renewed interest in the canyon and its archaeology. Driven primarily by oil and gas development, recent fieldwork is revealing new insights into the prehistoric occupation of the canyon and its place in the greater prehistory of the Northern Colorado Plateau. This presentation explores many of these new findings and examines how scientist's perceptions about the prehistoric inhabitants of the West Tavaputs Plateau are changing.
