New Exhibit Opening!

The BYU Museum of Peoples and Cultures (MPC) is pleased to announce our new exhibit, “Nuchu: Voices of the Ute People” opening October 28th. The exhibit celebrates the rich heritage of the Ute throughout northeastern Utah, including Utah Valley. In the exhibit, their voices tell the story of their vibrant history and life.

An opening reception for the exhibit will be held in connection with the MPC’s celebration of “Dia de los Muertos” on Friday, November 1st between 7-9 p.m. This combined event will highlight the new exhibit with guests learning about the Ute people and celebrating the Hispanic holiday by enjoying food and participating in craft activities.

The exhibit contains items collected around the Vernal area of Utah during the 1930s and 1940s. The text and labels for this exhibit are taken from interviews with Ute tribal members over the past 15 years, providing an opportunity to hear how the Ute view the items and their own heritage. Helping to fulfill the MPC’s mission to train future museum professionals, “students have combed through hours of interviews and texts, collaborated on the design of the galleries, and built the displays,” Kari Nelson, curator of education, said.

For over 50 years, the MPC has supported the academic mission of BYU through exhibits, cultural events, and caring for a collection of over 115,000 anthropological, archaeological, and ethnographic items in the custody of the University.
