Natural History Museum Preparedness Fair

Preparedness Fair September 27-28
Are You Ready for Nature’s Fury?

"Nature does nothing in vain," said Aristotle and that is a quote that greets visitors to the exhibit Nature Unleashed: Inside Natural Disasters at the Natural History Museum of Utah at the Rio Tinto Center. The exhibit, which explores the science of natural disasters, is also an excellent reminder as to why we need to be prepared!

In conjunction with the exhibit, the Natural History Museum of Utah is hosting a Preparedness Fair for the public on Friday, September 27 and Saturday, September 28 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Canyon and on the outside plaza. It is an opportunity to learn about resources and information for emergency planning as well as gain a better understanding of the science behind the history and headlines of natural disasters that have impacted our world.

Disasters can come at any time and in many forms – floods, winter storms, landslides, earthquakes, fires and more. Will you and your family be ready?

Various interactive displays, demos and experts will be available during the Preparedness Fair to help educate all ages including:

· Friends of the Utah Avalanche Center – Check-out safety equipment and review mountain safety tips.

· Intermountain Center for Disaster Preparedness – Meet with emergency experts about disaster medicine and see demos on computerized human models.

· Questar – Learn when action needs to be taken with your home’s natural gas meter.

· Red Cross of Utah – See what’s needed for first aid and emergency kits; review preparedness information, mobile apps, and speak with experts.

· Rocky Mountain Power – Watch power safety demos, visit with the company mascot “Slim the Lineman” and see a bucket truck used in emergencies.

· Rio Tinto – Learn about their preparedness plan used with the recent landslide and see time lapsed photos.

· Salt Lake City Emergency Management Program – Visit with building inspectors and structural engineers to learn about re-enforcing your home.
