January Events at The Ogden Nature Center


"Picture-Perfect Winter" Photo Contest
January 2 - January 31, 2012 - shoot your winter pictures!
Entry deadline: Thursday, February 2 at 4:30 pm
Awards: Winners will be announced in the LS Peery Education Center at 1 pm, Saturday, February 4
Entry fee: $3 per entry for ages 8-15, $5 per entry for ages 16 to adult
Winter is a terrific time to capture the wonders of the Ogden Nature Center. So grab your camera (film or digital) and come out to shoot an entry for an Ogden Nature Center photo contest.
Requirements: Entries must be shot at the Ogden Nature Center during regular center hours. No after-hours shots will be permitted. Entrants will be divided into two age groups: ages 16-adult and ages 8-15. Entrants can submit photos in two categories -- one entry per category:
. Ogden Nature Center's resident animals including resident birds, reptiles & arachnids in cages and the Nature Center's three wild turkeys
. General nature shots - includes the Nature Center's deer and all other wild critters, in addition to the landscape.
Photos submitted for judging must be no larger than 8 x 10 inches and mounted on cardboard or foam board (no frames or glass, please), with entrant's full name, age, phone number, e-mail, street address and entry category (see above) on the back of the board.

Wild Wednesdays -- Hooked on Fish
Wednesday, January 4 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
Did you know there are eight endangered or threatened species of fish that call Utah home? Spend an hour with an Ogden Nature Center naturalist and learn other cool facts about Utah's diverse fish. Observe Least Chub in the aquarium and meet some of our resident, fish-eating birds. Meet in the Visitor Center.

Preschool Discovery Days - Motionless Marvels

Choose a date and time:
Thursday, January 5 at 9:30 am, 11:00 am or 1:00 pm
Friday, January 6 at 9:30 am, 11:00 am or 1:00 pm
Cost:
$4 child/adult pair - members
$4 per child for preschool groups of 5 or more students, teachers/aides are free with class
$5 child/adult pair - nonmembers
Ages: 3-5
From towering trees to tiny rocks, many of nature's wonders hardly move at all. Sing songs and hear stories, play games and learn through hands-on discovery what makes nature so marvelous.
General admission fees will apply to any additional family members in attendance. A non-refundable deposit of 50% must be paid in advance to pre-register groups of 5 children or more. Pre-registration is required as classes fill up quickly. Please call 801-621-7595 to register.

Wild Wednesdays -- Fantastic Falcons
Wednesday, January 11 at 3:30 pm
Free for ONC members
$2 children / $3 seniors / $4 adults
All ages welcome!
What can dive at over 200 miles per hour? What has a beak that acts like a can opener? Falcons! Spend time observing a live falcon while learning about these fast and fascinating birds. Meet in the Visitor Center.

Project Wet Teacher Workshop
Saturday, January 14 from 9 am - 3 pm
Cost: $25.00
Project WET workshop participants gain hands on experience in the use of the Project WET Curriculum and Activity Guide for PreK-12th grade. A range of activities which link to the Utah State Core Curriculum for science, math, language arts, social studies, reading, art, and music will be demonstrated and participants will receive information and resources pertaining to Utah's water. These workshops use nationally recognized, award winning curriculum and give participants ideas and resources to integrate the environment into the classroom while meeting core curriculum requirements. Wild Wednesdays -- Who's a Buteo?

All ages welcome!
Meet Sampson, the Ogden Nature Center's resident Red-tail Hawk, while discovering what makes a buteo a buteo. Then take a short hike with a naturalist to look for signs of buteos at the Nature Center. Meet in the Visitor Center.

Scout Saturdays
Saturday, January 21
9 am - Native vs. Invasive
10 am - Conservation
11 am - Venomous Reptiles
Cost: $5 per scout
The Ogden Nature Center provides the perfect outdoor classroom for scout activities.
Have our teacher/naturalists help your scout pass off badge requirements during one of our 45-minute workshops. Reservations and a non-refundable deposit required. Please call 801-621-7595. Kundalini Yoga 8 Week Session
Mondays, January 23 through March 12 from 6:30 - 7:45 pm
Cost: $45 for members / $50 for nonmembers
Ages: Adults
This Kundalini yoga class is an 8-week series ideal for beginners or for those that want a gentle Kundalini practice. Please bring your own yoga mat and blanket. Wear loose comfortable clothing. It is suggested that you do not eat for at least two hours prior to the class. Taught by Bruce Fisk, certified Yoga instructor. Please call to pre-register at 801-621-7595.

Herbal Bath Products
Tuesday, January 24 from 6 - 7 pm
$8 members/$10 non-members
Ages: 8 to adult - children must be accompanied by an adult
Just in time for Valentine gift-giving! Flowers, oils, salts and scents will all come together to create natural products to pamper yourself and those you love. Bring one empty bottle, 4 oz. or smaller, and one jar (you can re-use a jelly jar) to package your homemade bath products in. We'll combine them into gift baskets you'll be proud to give. All ages welcome!
Learn about the many cool mammals that live in Utah and the Great Basin region.
Touch skulls and pelts and learn what makes mammals unique. Learn why you're a mammal! We'll put on coats and gloves and take a short walk with a naturalist to observe live deer and possibly other mammals at the Ogden Nature Center. Meet in the Visitor Center.

Project Learning Tree Teacher Workshop
Saturday, January 28 from 9 am to 5 pm

Project Learning Tree's (PLT) secondary (6-12th grade) environmental education program represents a series of learning modules that deal with current environmental topics and issues. All communities - urban, suburban, small town, rural - are experiencing growth and change, which has an impact on each community's environment. PLT's module, Exploring Environmental Issues: Places We Live provides educators with a useful tool for place-based education to help create a bond between young citizens and their communities. These workshops use nationally recognized, award winning curriculum and give participants ideas and resources to integrate the environment into the classroom while meeting core curriculum requirements. The Ogden Nature Center will be closed from 1 pm on Saturday, December 24 through Sunday, January 1. We will re-open on Monday, January 2, 2012.
