Utah Mysteries: Saltair Sally

MYSTERY SOLVED 8/7/2012: She has now been identified as Nicole Bakoles

October 2000, the skeletal remains of a young woman were found at the Great Salt Lake on the frontage road near Saltair. Because of the lack of leads determining who this young woman was, she was given the nickname "Saltair Sally". Who is this young woman? How did she end up in Utah? Why has nobody claimed her remains?

There wasn't much evidence found with her body except for a necklace that had three strands of tiny bluish-purple beads tangled in her hair, and a white extra large size Hanes t-shirt. Her hair has been a big clue in this case. She had long, possibly waist length, brown or auburn hair. Recently they were able to do an analysis on her hair to determine where she has lived, and possibly traveled to, during her lifetime. The results showed that during her life she might has lived in the Intermountain West Region including Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Oregon and Washington. Some detectives believe she was a runaway teen. You can read more about their findings and this hair analysis technique here.

The detectives determined she was between 5'0" and 5'3" tall, and weighed between 80 and 100 lbs. The determined date of death was anywhere between 1994 and 2000. There was some indication that her top vertebrae didn't fuse together correctly when she was growing, so she may have had a slight physical deformity or a mild case of spina bifida. She had quite a lot of dental work done but there were several cavities that had never been fixed.
