On
Saturday, September 24, BYU’s Museum of Peoples and Cultures (MPC) will be
participating in the nationwide “Museum Day,” sponsored by the Smithsonian
magazine. Every year, participating
museums offer free admission in honor of Museum Day. From 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m., the MPC will
have its doors open for this special event.
“The
MPC enjoys being a part of this annual, nation-wide event hosted by Smithsonian
magazine,” said Kari Nelson, Curator of Education at the MPC. “Since the
MPC is always free, it's a great excuse to have some fun with special
activities around the museum!”
Activities
taking place will focus on the MPC’s current exhibits. The MPC’s newest exhibit is Entwined: A
Vibrant Heritage of the Modern Maya, a display of beautiful textiles that shows
how past traditions are still a part of the modern Mayan world. Beneath Your Feet: Discovering the
Archaeology of Utah Valley is the MPC’s other exhibit which provides
glimpse into the lives of the Fremont people (a Native American tribe that inhabited
Utah Valley approximately 1000 years ago).
Activities include complimentary
tours, Mayan textile design, beaded bracelets, an archaeology activity, and a
Fremont figurine photo-op. There will
also be free refreshments (while they last).
“We try
to make this event fun and relaxed, just a come-and-go-as-you-please type of
event,” said Anna McKean, promotions manager at the MPC. “We hold these events for everyone in the
community to be enriched and entertained.”
The
MPC is located on 100 E. and 700 N. in Provo.
There is free parking across the street.
