Circus events at the Discovery Gateway

The Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus doesn't come to Salt Lake City until September, but the show starts early at Discovery Gateway! They've got an entire month filled with circus activities.

CircusWorks® Teachers' Seminar
Peggy Williams, the Education Outreach Manager for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, will conduct a 3-hour, fun-filled, interactive, curriculum-based seminar for teachers and leaders of K-8th grade students. For more information, call Rebecca Evans at (801) 456-5437 ext. 122.

Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Clown College®
Assisted by a Ringmaster and clown, Peggy Williams, the Education Outreach Manager for Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, will lead this 3-hour, fun-filled workshop for kids on how to be a clown. The kids will learn to juggle, balance, and perform like a real circus clown. Participants will need to bring assorted costume parts including a brightly colored t-shirt, a goofy hat, funny socks, and sneakers. Lunch is also included for all participants. Each child who graduates will recieve two ticket vouchers for the circus, a participation certificate, a circus hat, and other fun circus items. All graduates are also invited to appear on Fox 13's circus segments on Monday, August 16th from 6am - 8am with Fox's Big Budah.

CircusFit® Saturday
Learn CircusFit® activities from an official clown of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Activities include balancing, juggling objects, hoopology and more!

Juggle-a-thon
Join us for the Juggle-a-thon! Make your own juggling balls with Discovery Gateway staff then learn how to juggle them from an official clown of the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus. Saturday, August 28 2 pm - 3 pm Free with Museum Admission

Studio 444 Special Series: Creativity Under the Big Top
Join us for a special art series focused on the creativity of the circus. Your entire family will enjoy getting in touch with their inner artists.

Community Circus Sculpture
Friday, August 6 4:30 pm Free with Museum Admission
Using a variety of found objects, student artists will work together to create a 2-dimensional circus sculpture modeled on the artwork of American artist Alexander Calder.

Circus Posters
Friday, August 13 4:30 pm Free with Museum Admission
Using vintage and modern circus posters as inspiration, student artists will create their own circus poster using markers, colored pencils, and watercolors.

Water Color Clowns: The Work of Ute Mertens
Friday, August 20 4:30 pm Free with Museum Admission
Student artists will learn about the work of German artist Ute Mertens and then paint their own watercolor clowns.

Clown Faces by Changing Faces Face Painters
Friday, August 27 4:30 pm Members: $5/person, Non-members: $7/person, or $15 for a family of 3+.
Professional face painters, Changing Faces, will show student artists how to transform a regular face into a clown's face. Each participant will also have their face painted.
